This article is putting too much stress on the influence of the urbanized elites. It misses the fact that Bashar Assad used to live in the UK - a country that has given up much of its industry as a consequence of its rather extreme free market ideology.
I have serious problems with the negotiation strategy of Brahimi that seems to aim for a "roadmap" and regime change. It would be much better to reach consensus on important issues first. And one of those issues that should be discussed is the economic policy.
