Hands off!

Yet another extension for companies to submit bids in Lebanon’s first offshore oil and gas licensing round was announced in mid-August by Minister of Energy and Water Arthur Nazarian, indefinitely extending the deadline to no more than six months after the two needed decrees are adopted. But oddly enough, the youth wings of Lebanon’s political parties — the future politicians and party leaders themselves — agree that the current batch of politicians is obstructing the licensing round with their meddling. Today’s politicians, youth leaders suggest, are keen on securing a piece of a future gas revenue pie rather than focusing on how the potential resource would benefit the country and its citizens. Of cours, planning for an efficient use of our gas and oil revenue in ten years’time is necessary and important. But what is more so, is to define what ought to be done, as from TOMORROW. Forgetting, for the moment, our current security issues related to the Daech events, we are witnessing nowadays a public debt daily growth rate of $15 million dollars. If we do nothing about this dangerous increase, the growth rate of the debt will double by 2021, and treble by 2032, even if we assume that our expected revenue from oil & gas will start flowing in around 2023 and will be entirely devoted to repay the Debt. There are some painful decisions that our leaders ought to adopt URGENTLY, but are they ready for it? That is the two hundred billion dollars question!
